Success Stories

Farhana is eleven years old and is currently studying at Jasola MCD School, New Delhi. Three years back her family decided to migrate to Delhi from Uttar Pradesh. This child of an illiterate mother was admitted in a private school with an annual fee of Rs. 1200.

Unfortunately after a while her mother fell ill and could neither take care of herself or her 4 children, seeing no improvement in health and lack of local solidarity, the family moved back to U.P. Farhana being the oldest child replaced her ill mother and started looking after her siblings and could no more attend the school. Her mother's health healed fairly within a month and the family returned to Delhi.

Missing school without notice, Farhana was unlisted from the school, the direction team of the school also refused to re-integrate her in any class. Paying a private school became impossible for her parents who had already spent great chuck of their money on medical services & thus Farhana too turned out to be a drop out.

But where there is a will there is a way, Farhana got to know a few friends who regularly attended one of the Sakshi’s Non formal Education (NFE) Centers. Full of excitement she informed her parents about the same and with their support she immediately joined the centre. Farhana made best of this opportunity to reactivate and enhance her knowledge and performed well in the weekly tests. She then prepared herself for the Government school admission tests and succeeded in May 2008 was finally accepted directly in Standard IV at Jasola MCD School.

Israt is fifteen years old, third child among seven siblings. Yet again her family too in search of occupational opportunities migrated from Bihar five years ago.

Israt attended school till standard IV in her hometown, but since the family moved to a new city where they had to struggle to fulfill the basic household needs she could no more afford to attend the school. For her family neither was it the priority nor was it necessity to send her school. Fortunately, Israt's three younger siblings were sent to primary schools. The youngest child who is five years old was attending Sakshi ECCD centre at Shaheen Bagh, New Delhi. After discussions on the necessity and importance of education and promotional work with Sakshi her parents decided to register Israt also in one of the Sakshi vocational training centers.

Sakshi often witnesses such families where many such Israts cannot attend schools due do the lack of parent's awareness about importance of education. Promotion work in such communities thus becomes all the more important.

After she joined the vocational center her parents realize the role of education and attaining a good living and standard of life.

Rani is fifteen years old. She attended Sakshi's vocational training centre at Shaheen Bagh, New Delhi from May to October 2008. She was taught dress making and hand & machine embroidery at the centre.

Rani is deaf and her parents could never afford to send her to a special school. Fortunately, she learnt writing with the help of friends and cousins. Inspite of being a handicapped child she helped her illiterate parents and four siblings to learn writing. Attending cutting and tailoring lectures was a way for her to be active, meet new people and to enlarge her environment. What she assimilated during her course allows her to become independent, occupy herself and spend her time meaningful.

Her parents now want her to be main streamed into a formal education school to offer her a better future. Sakshi is going to help Rani to attend school regularly.
