“Water Centric” is a “bridge” organization between geographic areas that are in utmost need of improved water, sanitation and hygiene, and the international agencies, foundations, technical experts, and the individuals committed to change the situation.
“Water Centric” chose to collaborate with Sakshi to start up in 10 primary schools in New Delhi seeing Sakshi's strong links with the local schools and that it led a similar project (Parivartan) from 1998 to 2002. This action is integrated in “Water, Sanitation & Hygiene Education (or Wat-San) Programme by Water Centric. Both the institution is working together since 2008 & shall continue till 2011.
According to the Government of India and UNICEF, only half of the Indian Primary schools have safe drinking water, and only 1 in 10 has sanitary facilities. In case toilets do exists, they are either in few numbers or are poorly maintained to be used. Often girls don't attend or drop out of the school in lack of basic toilet facilities. The general objective of this three years programme is to educate and mobilize children to act as catalytic agents to spread the message of sanitation to their parents and communities.
Ten Municipal Corporation Delhi Schools are covered by this project. Firstly, facilities for drinking water and toilets are being installed or improved. Secondly, Sakshi and “Water Centric” are promoting extra-curricular activities to sustain interest in sanitary facilities.
