SAKSHI – ‘Centre for Information, Education and Communication’, founded in1993, is a registered non- profit voluntary organization registered under:
The Societies Registration Act, 1860,
The Foreign Contribution Regulation Act and
Under Section 80 G of the Income Tax Act.
SAKSHI has been working with the underprivileged children of all religions in Okhla and Jasola Village. These villages are amongst the most deprived, exploited, educationally backward & unauthorized slums of Delhi. The area has not seen much development in terms of basic human needs, social, educational and health facilities and the community comprises largely of the under privileged and marginalized segment of our population. Most of whom are scraping an existence survival is the KEY.
Late Dr. D. Anand was the founder President of SAKSHI. After working abroad for quite a long time Dr. D Anand’s returned to India in 1990 and found a dire lack of educational and health facilities in the slums and decided to start an organization which focuses on child health and education, Life Skills teaching and Universal Elementary Education Programme in Delhi, so that the child has a better chance of survival in these slums and gets a foot up in life.
MISSION OF THE ORGANIZATION
- To open the doors of Primary Education for “unreached children-those who do not have an access to basic education”, a step towards holistic development even while living in slums.
- To integrate children who are marginalized and sidelined by lack of educational opportunities, into the fabric of mainstream society through vocational and remedial classes.
- To motivate and empower the community to be responsible for the overall development of the under privileged areas, which form their environment.
SAKSHI has done pioneering work in the field of teaching and training of ‘Value- Based Education’. SAKSHI has carried out diagnostic studies in “Primary school and training of teachers on the aspects of Value Based Education”. It is still in its infancy stage and is likely to fade out after the current ‘thrust’ from International agencies, unless further funds are found to continue with this vital project.
SAKSHI’s focus is to highlight Community health & Preventive medicine as a route towards healthy living.
VISION OF THE ORGANIZATION
Sakshi has been working towards the care and rehabilitation of slum children for the last 15 years. It has primarily worked in marginalized Delhi slums which are greatly underdeveloped in terms of educational and health facilities. Children living here usually do not attend school and thus many of them turns out to be Rag picker or construction worker or even drift into a life of petty crime.
Sakshi believes that the basic needs and rights of children are synonymous. Each child needs and has the right to adequate food, clothing, shelter, education, recreation, medical facilities, care, and love. Sakshi works to protect children’s Rights and to expand opportunities to achieve their full potential.
We consider that underprivileged populations cannot free from the vicious circle of poverty and benefit from sustainable development without education. Education reinforces a Child's abilities to choose his/her future, enlarging their vision about themselves and the world.
